Safe first steps for a jammed disposal
Do these before you call. They solve many jams.
Power off
Switch off the disposal and unplug it, or turn off the breaker.
Use the hex key
Insert the wrench into the bottom socket and rotate back and forth to free the flywheel.
Check the reset
Press the red reset button on the base after the jam is cleared.
Run water
Test with cold water running. Call us if it hums, leaks or the sink stays full.
Repair, replace or something else
A hum without turning means a jam or a failed motor. A leak at the top means a bad flange seal. A leak at the side usually means the housing has cracked, and no part fixes that. A sink that fills with water when the disposal runs is not a disposal problem. The drain is blocked.
That last case is common in kitchens where grease has narrowed the line. In that case we clear the line first, and drain cleaning or hydro jetting may be the real fix.
Choosing a disposal
A bigger motor is not always better.
| Type | Fits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous feed, 1/3 to 1/2 horsepower | Light use, small households | Basic models grind softer scraps |
| Continuous feed, 3/4 horsepower or more | Busy kitchens | Quieter, handles tougher scraps |
| Batch feed | Homes with kids | Runs only with the stopper in place |
Disposals do not handle grease, bones, fibrous peels or pasta well in any size.
The dishwasher connection and the air gap
A new disposal has a knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet. If it is left in place, the dishwasher drains poorly and water may stand in the dishwasher. We remove it when we hook up the drain hose.
Local plumbing rules in Minnesota follow the Minnesota Plumbing Code in chapter 4714, which governs how the dishwasher drain connects. We route it in a way that prevents backflow into the machine.
Water under the sink and the cabinet is wet
A disposal leak soaks the cabinet floor within minutes.
- Turn off the disposal and the dishwasher.
- Close the sink supply valves under the cabinet.
- Pull stored items out and dry the floor to prevent mold and swelling.
- Call the 24/7 line. We book same-day appointments when available.
What affects disposal repair and installation pricing
Pricing depends on the model and the plumbing behind it.
A worn-out disposal is not an insurance claim. Water damage from a sudden leak may be.

Questions people ask
Yes. The 24/7 line is open at night and on weekends, and we book same-day appointments when available for leaks and backups.
The flywheel is jammed. Power it off, use the hex key in the bottom socket and press reset. If it still hums, the motor may have failed.
Many last around eight to twelve years with normal use. Hard use and grease shorten that.
No grease. Coffee grounds in small amounts pass, but they build up over time in older drain lines.
Yes. We handle the mount, the drain connection, the dishwasher hose and the electrical hookup.
Usually it is trapped food. Cleaning the splash guard and grinding ice fixes most. A smell that persists may come from the drain.
