Pipe burst: the first ten minutes
What you do before the plumber arrives decides how much damage you get.
- Close the main shutoff, usually near the water meter or where the line enters the house.
- Open the lowest faucet and flush upstairs toilets to drain the lines.
- Turn off the water heater and the electrical circuit to wet rooms if you can reach the panel safely.
- Photograph the damage for your insurer, then call the 24/7 line for same-day or after-hours dispatch.
Why pipes burst in a Minnesota winter
Water expands as it freezes, and the ice plug in a pipe pushes pressure against the section between the plug and the closed faucet. The pipe splits there, often a long lengthwise crack. You may not see the leak until the ice thaws and water flows.
Frozen pipes cluster in exterior walls, unheated crawlspaces, garages and under-sink cabinets on outside walls. Minnesota's plumbing code, chapter 4714, requires buried water piping to sit at least 12 inches below local frost depth, and the state sets frost depth at 3.5 feet for Dakota County.
Frozen versus burst: what to do
A frozen pipe is not yet a burst. Timing matters.
| Situation | What it means | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| No water at one faucet in cold weather | Likely frozen, not yet split | Open the tap, apply gentle heat, call if no flow |
| Water stains or dripping after a thaw | Probably split | Shut the main and call |
| Hissing in the wall | Active leak | Shut the main and call |
| Ice on the pipe but flowing | Partial freeze | Warm the area and watch |
Never use an open flame to thaw a pipe. A hair dryer or warm towels are safer.
What the repair looks like
We cut out the split section, install new pipe and fittings, and pressure test the line. If a long run has frozen and split in several places, we discuss whether to replace the run, and repiping is the option for homes with many failures.
For frozen service lines or a break between the meter and the house, see water service line repair. The City of South St. Paul says the owner is responsible for the service line from the building to the main.
What affects burst pipe repair pricing
Burst pipes vary a lot in scope.
Homeowners insurance often covers sudden burst-pipe water damage but may exclude damage from long neglect or vacant, unheated homes. Call your carrier the same day.

Repairs follow the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) as adopted in Minnesota. Thawing guidance follows common safety practice.
Questions people ask
Yes. The 24/7 line is open every night and weekend, and we book same-day appointments when available for burst and frozen pipes.
Look near the water meter or where the water line enters the house, often in the basement. Locate it now so you are ready.
You can try a hair dryer or warm towels on an exposed pipe with the tap open. Do not use a torch or open flame.
Often it covers the resulting water damage if the burst was sudden. It may not cover the pipe itself. Ask your carrier.
Insulate exposed lines, seal drafts around pipes in exterior walls and keep a small drip during hard cold snaps.
No. Keep the furnace running once the water is off to dry the house, unless water has reached electrical equipment.
